This is the most important question we can ask. How we answer it determines our eternal destiny, and makes all the difference in how we live. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me."  Every aspect of human life had been corrupted by sin. Sin has created a kind of spiritual blindness.  Because of sin, God's righteousness demanded a just punishment. The just punishment for rebellion against God is death. But in His great mercy and grace, God became human in the form of Jesus Christ, and took the sins of humankind upon himself, and died as a sacrifice to give us the opportunity to have a right relationship with God. Jesus Christ died for our sins, enduring the punishment which we deserved. Jesus Christ offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who will accept this gift of grace.  The Bible tells us that God loved the world so much, that he gave his only son, and everyone who put their faith in Jesus would have everlasting life (John 3:16).  We cannot earn this gift, and we cannot do anything to make ourselves more or less acceptable to God. Jesus Christ did it all for us. All that we have to do is to accept Christ's death on the cross as the one thing we will trust for our salvation. That is what it means to "be saved."  

 

Some people try to put Jesus in the same category as other religious leaders or prophets.  They want to claim that he was a great teacher or even the wisest man who ever lived, but they wish to deny that he was divine.  But Jesus himself claimed divinity.  We cannot logically regard him as just a great teacher or prophet among many great teachers and prophets.  Jesus Christ was not like any teacher or prophet. He was the very unique and special Son of God, sent to die on the cross for our sins.  There is no other figure in history that is like Jesus Christ.  When we read the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) with an open heart, we see his uniqueness, and the Spirit of God can open our eyes to see the truth about Jesus.   At the moment we believe in Jesus Christ, and the truth of what he said about himself, then we become "Christians."  Only God can open our eyes to see, but when we see, we must accept Him or reject Him.

 

So who is Jesus?  Jesus is the way to a right relationship with God.  Jesus is truth in living form.  Jesus is the way to the life that is pleasing to God. As a man who lived on this earth in human form, he lived a perfect sinless life. He is the model for our lives.  He lived in perfect obedience to the will of God, as we should live.  He willingly gave his life that we might live.  Jesus lives today, and today he stands before each of us and invites us to accept the grace of his gift to us.  If  you will trust him in faith, ask him to be your Lord, he will transform you from the inside out into a new person.  This is the moment when we accept in faith that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and is called "the New Birth."  It is the beginning of a process of spiritual transformation in which we are made to be like Him. Jesus Christ will become the Lord of our lives, and the treasure of our hearts, and we will discover that in serving Him, we find the greatest joy and fulfillment we can ever know.
