NRPA's AWEsome Program

The Narrow River Preservation Association (NRPA) has funded the Active Watershed Education Program (AWEsome) in South County schools since 1996. After a hiatus of five years, the AWEsome Program Training will begin January 2005 and run through the end of April. This three-credit series of training workshops, instructed by Denise Poyer, Program Director of the Wood-Pawcatuck Watershed Association, will train local educators to incorporate Watershed Science into their schools’ curricula.

Environmental advocacy and education are two of NRPA's most important objectives. The components offered in the AWEsome Program address those objectives, in educating the future stewards of the Narrow River Watershed about the importance of their natural resources.

The Program is nationally recognized, and assists teachers and their students with studying a watershed, participating in hands-on science and investigating local environmental issues. The goal of the AWEsome program in Narragansett is to increase awareness about and future stewardship for the Narrow River Watershed.

The program is geared for grades K - 8, and while the curriculum guide is most readily adaptable for the middle school grades, all grades from first through twelfth are welcome to participate.
