Leadership
At the very heart of the Presbyterian tradition is the conviction that the people of God have the right to choose and elect their own leaders. This commitment manifests itself in a style of “representative democracy” that is embodied in the boards of the church: the Session and the Board of Deacons. The officers who serve on these boards have been identified for their gifts of leadership and a commitment to the life and ministry of New Providence and are nominated and elected to three-year terms by the congregation.
New Providence Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbytery of East Tennessee and the Synod of Living Waters, councils (governing bodies) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). As a congregation of the PC(USA), New Providence is organized according to the denomination's Book of Order. Men and women are nominated and elected by the congregation to serve as ordained ruling elders and deacons, and teaching elders (ministers of Word and Sacrament) are chosen and called by the congregation itself.
