If we are all clay pots in the hands of the Potter, and if God has eternal plans to make some vessels for mercy and some for wrath, than how do we know if we are one or the other? Could we live this life under the illusion we are one, and find out at the Judgment that we are the other? The apostle Paul, without blinking an eye, discusses both God's eternal plans in Romans 9, and our responsibility in Romans 9-10. And if we believe upon the Lord Jesus Christ, we can know that we are vessels of mercy, for eternity.
