The concept map, along with other knowledge map formats such as mind maps and association maps, is primarily a way of organising keyword information in such a way that the position of, and linkage between, the keywords gives additional meaning to the keyword itself. Concept maps are more traditionally drawn by an "expert" using recommended cmap tools, and mind maps are more traditionally the domain of the "learner" with a set of coloured pens, but each offers possibilities for developing understanding, both of the topic under examination, and of the most effective way to support the learner in his or her journey to enlightenment.
