If we are committed to making disciples, it’s important for us to have a clear picture of what Jesus envisioned us to be as His maturing followers. Here at Hope we have embraced four core values that not only help define a fully devoted Christ-follower, but they also influence the distinct direction which we continue to pursue as a church. Today we are seeing that lived out in the world around us. Every day 13 Christ-followers lose their lives for their faith and 12 churches or Christian buildings are attacked. On the one hand, this may seem discouraging. But David Curry, president and CEO of Open Doors USA says this: “The numbers of God’s people who are suffering should mean the Church is dying—that Christians are keeping quiet, losing their faith, and turning away from one another. But that’s not what’s happening. Instead, in living color, we see the words of God recorded in the prophet Isaiah: ‘I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert’” (Isa. 43:19). So how do we stay faithful and not give up during these difficult days? Let's talk about it!

In May of 2020, Elizabeth Silver wrote: “Three years ago, I wrote a book which explored how we cope not just with the unknown, but the uncertain elements of our health…. The title 'The Tincture of Time: A Memoir of (Medical) Uncertainty' comes from the commonly-known phrase used by medical professionals the world over when the only answer for a prognosis is time. It’s not the cliché that time will heal all wounds, because it may for some and may not for others, but rather the prescription of time as the only source of answers. It is a phrase I now rely on whenever something unexpected enters.” Silver makes some good points—like the need to accept that uncertainty is part of life and that it “is something we can and must live with.” However, is time really “the only source of answers”? Is blind acceptance of the reality of uncertainty the only salve for our fears and anxiety? Or is there something more we can hang on to? Thankfully, God says there is more— much, much more! What is the cost of following Jesus? On the one hand, we begin a relationship with Jesus Christ by grace through faith. Grace--a free gift paid for by the very life of Christ. It's free. And yet at the same time, however, following Christ can and does mean the cost of your very own life. This truth is exemplified by our next story in the book of Daniel.
