About our name. . . although we usually refer to ourselves simply as Sharpsburg First, we are part of a global group of churches called the International Church of the Nazarene.  Although the Church of the Nazarene serves in 160 world areas, our focus is on ministry to this community.  Our name actually comes from scripture.  Because Jesus grew up in the city of Nazareth, He was sometimes called a Nazarene. We want to be like Jesus in every possible way, therefore, we choose to identify with him in name.

A little about us. . . We have been at this location since we became a community of believers in 1996.  Pastor Jeff and Kathy Hines came to us in 2001, and retired in November 2020. We were excited to welcome Pastor Micah and Halisha Sturm early in 2021.

In case you are wondering. . . we have no specific dress codes. People here dress as they want to so you will see about everything from ties to shorts. Our philosophy is that how you dress is your decision, not ours. We are just glad you came!

On Sunday morning, we will welcome you with warm greetings, coffee, tea, and sweets in our Gathering Grounds Café.

Worship Style? We sort of wonder about that too. . . We are not sure that we have a style. We just worship the Lord! We don’t think of ourselves as traditional or contemporary.  We want to focus on “Who” and not “how” we worship.  We are pretty sure that we are not formal, but at the same time, we do try to be reverent.

What do we believe? Many of our beliefs are close to our hearts. We are passionate about the Gospel, and we want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone we meet. We offer no apologies.  We are an evangelistic church that believes everyone needs to know Jesus.

We believe that God reveals Himself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  His Word is given to us by divine inspiration that inerrantly reveals His will concerning everything necessary for our salvation (Matt 1:20-25, John 7:39, Luke 24:44-47)

We believe that God is the Creator of everything in the world. However, we do not believe that sin is a created thing, so we don’t blame God for the bad things we see. We believe that God created people with the ability to choose what is good and what is bad. Because the latter was the choice, we believe that sin (all that is bad) entered our world.  (Genesis 3:5-6, Job 15:14)

Scripture teaches that by God’s grace and Christ’s sacrifice, we can repent of sin and allow Jesus to give us a new life. In fact, we believe that through Jesus we can receive a new start with God as one of His children. (Mark 10:45, Psalm 14:1-4, Romans 2:4, John 1:12-13)

But it gets even better. . . we believe that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can live an empowered life that makes living in a holy way before God a reality. God, who saves us from sin, can purify our hearts as well, and equip us to live a godly life. (Acts 2:1-4, Phil 3:10-15)

Looking to fit in? We are a small church, but we offer many ministries and outreaches, and meet several times a week to gather and worship and study.   Please take a look around our website to learn more!
