Message to Youth:
8 steps to deal with Temptation
1. Pray
Matthew 6:13 God is the one we must rely on to give us the strength to deal with and avoid temptation. We MUST call upon Him to help us in our times of need. By praying we attune our will with God's desires and by doing so avoid much of the temptation that our desires lead us into.
2. Use the Word of God
Even Jesus was tempted, Matthew 4:1-11. By knowing and using scripture properly Jesus was able to thwart off temptation directly from Satan. If we will take the time to study and memorize scripture we will have the ammunition to fight the devil and he will flee and so will the temptation(s).
3. Understand Your Personal Weaknesses
Not everyone is tempted in the same way. James 1:14 says that we are drawn away with our own lusts and desires. Each person has their own week areas to deal with. You need to understand your own weakness so that you will know how to combat and avoid it.
4. Run from Temptation
God promised a way to escape temptation. 1 Corinthians 10:13 If you will look you can ALWAYS find a way out. Many time our temptation comes when you find yourself in certain situations or places. When you recognize one of those situations it is time to pack up your stuff and get out of there.
5. Find someone to be accountable to
The Bible teaches that creating accountability with someone else can help you in your struggle against temptation (James 5:16). You don't have to go into detail about you struggles with your accountability partner about your struggles, but they do need to know how to pray for you. Find someone who is a mature Christian. Working together find verses that will be helpful to you. Have this person keep a check on you to make sure your staying true to God. Don't lie to them about it, the only way they can help it for you to be honest. Pray together for each others strength to overcome.
6. Don’t be Discouraged
Even of you fail don't allow it to defeat you. Realize that you probably will fall to temptation on occasion, but that is no reason to quit your Christian walk. Allow it to strengthen you and learn not to fall for the same traps again.
7. Confess and Repent
When you fall to temptation, go to God and confess. He already knows. The truth is, He has already forgiven you if you're a Christian. Going to Him in confession makes it easier for you to have clear communication with Him. Admitting a fault if one of the fastest ways to recover.
8. Repeat
